ONLINE SURVEY

I created a survey in order to appeal to my target market who would frequently be online.

 1. Many preferred the Masthead behind the artist. I will definitely take this into consideration. If the Masthead was in front of the artist there is a possibility that it would hide his face

2. Black and white, binary opposites was popular. Black and white compliment each other nicely and would compliment by 'sophisticated' R&B genre

3. Most would prefer the artist to be in casual attire however i feel this look has been utilized in magazines. I want to challenge conventions and so a formal look is best.

4.A male artist is what they would like to see. As my magazine is targeting males, a male artist would be beneficial as the male demographic can relate better to a male

5.  Interviews are more interesting and so i'm not surprised that most readers would want an interview.

6.  The more the merrier seems to be the case, a variety of images is more appealing to readers.
 7. A good balance is essential so not to be overpowered.

8. Short and sweet won by a mile.

9. My initial plan was to target the 16-18 year old demographic.

DRAFT OF MAGAZINE

Orange, Black and Red will be used throught the magazine because they represent the R & B genre. A medium close up shot of the artist is appropriate seeing as the double page spread is about him. A quote from the artist is included.

The contents page has a large image of another artist. The word 'contents' is segrated to make it look more appealing. The pictures on the left hand side relate to an article, the numbers are in orange and black.

The double page spread has one large image of the artist. A quote is also included to attrat the readers attention and its different from the usual title used in articles. A smaller picture in the centre of the page relates to the text.

FOCUS GROUP

To further my understanding I conducted a focus group.

What I learnt
  • The more images the better- keeps readers entertained and engaged
  • R&B genre popular among teenage demographic
  • Informative element of magazine is important (interview for double page spread)
  • In favour of my orange and black colour scheme however since then I have opted for a more neutral combination of black and white.
  • Pose of artists just as important as what he/she wears. Helps in conveying the genre.

COSTUME/PROPS PLANNING

Costume from omushigo

Moodboard indicating the type of outfit my artists would wear. Formal and Casual wear. The outfits worn by my models will connote wealth, sophistication with a hint of the 'hood' element to suit my 'classy' RnB genre.

DIARY ENTRY- DAY FOUR

I will use Da font to create my Masthead. I hope to use black and white as they are contrasting colours that typically work well with each other. Also it compliments the genre nicely and is unisex and therefore appeals to both males and females.

Here you can see the different styles available to me. I hope to use a font that's quiet bold and masculine. 2

ANALYSIS OF MUSIC MAGAZINE KEY CONVENTIOS

Analysis of Music magazine key conventions from omushigo

What I Learnt

  • The positioning of the artist whether it be behind or in front of  the Masthead plays great significance. For my own product, i want the artist in front of the Masthead because i want readers to focus on the artist as he is my selling point
  • The positioning of the Masthead itself is also very important as it lets audiences know what magazine their reading. It needs to be bold and unique. My products Masthead will be at the center of the page.
  • A variety of images on the contents page looks better and busier. Also allows audiences to know first hand the artists which will be mentioned. Different shot sizes is also important
  • There should be a good balance between text and images on the double page spread to cater to those who enjoy reading or enjoy pictures.
  • Including a quote from the artist is popular and i will be sure to follow this convention
  • As well as following and developing conventions i hope to challenge them also to make my magazine unique and interesting. If you follow conventions to closely your magazine lacks authenticity and will find it hard to compete with others.

DIARY ENTRY- DAY THREE

I will look at key conventions of a magazine to ensure that I follow these conventions so that my product looks as realistic and professional as possible. As well as this, I will examine title blocks to inspire me and hopefully get the creative juices flowing.

Sunday, 14 October 2012

DIARY ENTRY- DAY TWO

In order to establish what needed to be featured in all three of my pages I analysed various magazines from the same genre. Using Google images, I will analyse various magazine in he hopes of getting an indication of the style and typical conventions of an R&B magazine.

DIARY ENTRY- DAY ONE

The first decision I have to make is the genre of magazine I would like to produce. As a fan of Drake, I thought an R&B magazine would be an easy genre as I am familiar with it.

IMPROVED FRONT COVER

After my first attempt, a second attempt was made to improve my front cover. I followed my own advice and used color, yellow and blue are the school colors and so its only just that i use these colors. A further improvement which could have been made is the font style and size of the headlines. Smaller, less bold font could have been used so not to distract readers from the Masthead. Furthermore, a more appealing and colorful masthead would have been more effective.

CONTENTS PAGE

Compared to my front cover, i feel that my contents page is effective as I've used a variety of images. However one criticism would be to include images with a variety of shot sizes. Also, to utilize color more

FRONT COVER

At this moment in time i am not very familiar with Photoshop. The front cover is bland and lacks color. The font doesn't suit the genre, however, the image goes with the school feel of the magazine. I hope to improve my Photoshop skills as i progress during the project. It would have been beneficial to have the model looking directly at the camera to interact with buyers.

The above image is a school magazine cover designed to inform and attract potential students into joining Ridgewater College.

Are main focus is the women due to her being positioned in the centre of the page.  Her facial expression connotes happiness and her body language suggests how she is relaxed and at ease. The subheading “Global learning’ closely links with the globe seen at the bottom of the page, this acts as a visual aid and reiterates the fact that Ridgewater College provides their students with world class education. This idea is strengthened by the ethnicity of the student. The background scenery appears to be quite homely and implies that Ridgewater is a second home to all the students. The bright lighting highlights the students joy and compliments the overall essence of education being a pleasant experience at Ridgewater College. The font used for the title is simple and stands out from the rest. “Inside!” persuades the reader to explore the magazine in more depth.  The student is dressed in a casual yet smart way to summarise the overall feel of the school, a relaxed environment where students can learn.
